This play was written in 1957 and originally entitled The Dumb Waiter, and premiered at the Hampstead Theatre Club in December 1960. Pinter once again put two people in a room to talk about the absurd servitude that human relations create.
Ben and Gus are two contract killers locked in a dreary basement. While they are waiting for orders from the organization they work for, they begin to receive unusual orders for food via the dumb waiter.
