The story of Frederic Amat's dedication to the theatre is closely linked to the history of the Teatre Lliure. On 28 March 1977, just a few months after it opened, his first collaboration with Cesc Gelabert, Acció 0 and Acció U, premiered in Gràcia. This exhibition aims simply to provide a taster, an minimal visual anthology, of the engaged dialogue between Amat and this theatre that in its name bears a commitment that the artist shares.
It is not a complete overview of all Amat's work for the stage, and neither is it a comprehensive overview of his collaborations with the Lliure. It shows the tip of the tip of the iceberg. Amat has designed sets, costumes, objects, publications and posters, but has also a been stage manager and has created multimedia productions including Oedipus Rex, Blanco and Maddalena.
The exhibition focuses on a selection of Amat's contribution to the Lliure over the past 20 years, from the stage design of Roberto Zucco (1993), directed by Lluís Pasqual, described by newspapers of the period as “the occupation of the Palau de l’Agricultura” in Montjuïc by the Lliure, before the refurbishment of the new venue, to the production for children of Moby Dick (un viatge pel teatre) (2013), and includes productions as iconic as Tot esperant Godot [Waiting for Godot], also directed by Pasqual, collaborations with Gelabert on Zumzum-ka, Preludis and Ki, and the work on the mural Pluja de sang [Blood rain] in the refurbished Gràcia theatre.
